Lake Murray, La Mesa
Take Interstate 8 (EAST of the I-15 Freeway) to College Avenue. Exit and proceed NORTH on College Ave. At the lights at Del Cerro Blvd. you will see a Chevron Station on your right. Turn RIGHT onto Del Cerro Blvd. Just past the Chevron is a stop sign at Madra. Turn LEFT onto Madra.
Proceed along Madra as it winds up the hill and down the other side. As Madra crosses Park Ridge, it becomes Murray Park Drive. The park entrance is about half a mile further on your right.
Turn RIGHT into the Park and proceed to the end of the drive to the dirt parking lot near the ball fields. We will walk on the north side of the lake, which is less crowded than down by the picnic area and boat docks at the main entrance.
San Dieguito Park, Rancho Santa Fe
Take Interstate 5 and exit at Lomas Santa Fe Drive. Go EAST on Lomas Santa Fe for about a mile, continuing through the stop sign at Highland Drive even though you'll see the main entrance to the park. Drive until you reach El Camino Real and turn LEFT. Half a mile down, park along the fence outside another park entrance on your LEFT. Walk into the park.
Coronado
Coronado is accessed by SR 75 off the I-5 Freeway just south of downtown San Diego. If you are coming down the I-15 or along the I-8, take the 163 South to the I-5 South. SR 94 also ends at the I-5 just north of the 75 exit.
Take the 75 across the bridge onto Coronado. Once across, continue along 3rd Avenue until it ends at Alameda Blvd. Turn LEFT onto Alameda... do not enter the Naval base straight ahead. Continue on Alameda and once past 10th Street, turn RIGHT onto Marina Avenue. Then turn RIGHT onto Ocean Drive. There is a grassy area (Sunset Park) on the right at the end of the road. Park on the road there.
We will walk along Ocean Drive, behind the famous Hotel del Coronado then along Orange Avenue, the town's main street, and then back to the beach through the quaint neighborhoods of Coronado.
Los Penasquitos Canyon, Rancho Penasquitos
Take Interstate 15 to the Rancho Penaquitos area, south of Escondido, north of Poway. Exit at Mercy Road/Scripps Poway Pkwy and go WEST on Mercy Road.
Continue for half a mile until the road ends at Black Mountain Road. Go straight through the lights into the Preserve parking lot. Parking is $3 per vehicle,
bring exact change.
We will walk along the dirt trails on the south side of the creek, some shade, some open space. There could be muddy spots if there has been rain.
Shelter Island
This walk is quite near the airport in San Diego, which is on Harbor Drive. Follow signs off the I-5 Freeway for the airport. After you pass the terminals, continue just over a mile and then bear LEFT onto Scott Street. In half a mile, turn LEFT onto Shelter Island Drive. Once on Shelter Island, you will see a traffic cirle or round-about. Bear to the right of it and ahead you will see several parking areas in the median. Park about half way down when you spot other people with greyhounds congregating.
Batiquitos Lagoon, Carlsbad
Take Interstate 5 north to Carlsbad and exit at Poinsettia, heading EAST. Turn RIGHT onto Batiquitos Drive, Then turn RIGHT onto Gabbiano Lane. Park on the street at the lagoon entrance at the end of Gabbiano.
We will walk east along the lagoon and back.
Mission Bay
Take the I-5 Freeway to the Clairmont Drive exit which is two exits north of where the I-8 Freeway ends at the I-5 just north of San Diego. Go WEST off the freeway and where the off-ramp ends at Mission Bay Drive, you will see a visitors' center directly in front of you. Turn LEFT and park next to the visitors' center.
Oceanside Harbor
Take Interstate 5 into North County to Oceanside. Exit at Harbor Drive. Take Harbor Drive WEST to a stop sign and turn LEFT (to the right is an entrance into Camp Pendleton).
Go down a bit of a hill towards the harbor and veer right onto North Harbor Drive. Follow the road for 1 mile. Park in Lot #3 on your left which is the lot immediately before the parking area for the Jolly Roger restaurant.
We will walk back along the harbor past where you entered, past the restaurants and shops, out to the beach and back.
Balboa Park
To get to Balboa Park from the north, take either Interstate 5 South or Interstate 15 South. to the 163 South. From the east, take Interstate 8 to the 163 South. Follow the signs for the entrance at Park Blvd.
From the south, follow Interstate 5 north and exit at Park Blvd.
Drive along Park Blvd, following signs for the San Diego Zoo but turn left at
Village Place which is one traffic light BEFORE the zoo parking lot.
Park in the lot to your left by the enormous ficus tree. We'll meet there for a walk through the park
Rancho Guajome, Oceanside
You can map from home to the intersection of Highway 76 and Guajome Lake Road in Oceanside. (Note, this is NOT the location for Rancho Guajome Adobe, nor is it the location where we met prior to 2008.)
From the coast, take Interstate 5 in Oceanside to Hwy 76 and go EAST.
If you are coming from inland, take Interstate 15 to Hwy 76 and go WEST.
Near the Vista/Oceanside border, just west of the Home Depot store, turn SOUTH onto Guajome Lake Road. Drive past the first park entrance on your right and continue to the top of the hill. Parking is allowed on both sides of the street. We will enter the park here for our walk.
Mission Trails Regional Park, Mission Gorge/Santee
The park entrance is at Highway 52 and Mast Blvd in Santee if you would like to map to this intersection from home.
From Interstate 15, exit Hwy 52 and go EAST. This exit is just south of the I-15/163 split. Follow the 52 until you reach the Mast Blvd exit.
From Interstate 8, exit Hwy 125 in La Mesa and proceed NORTH until you reach the 52. Take the 52 West exit and proceed to Mast Blvd, which will be your first exit.
Just off to the WEST at the end of Mast Blvd you will see a driveway into a large parking area that includes a staging area for horses. Make a sharp right on Mast from the exit ramp.
We will walk through the open, mostly level trails than wind through the park.
Miramar Reservoir, Scripps Ranch
The reservoir is off the I-15 Freeway between Highway 56 (Ted Williams Pkwy) and Highway 52 (Miramar Marine Corps Air Station). Exit the I-15 at Mira Mesa Blvd and drive EAST. At the traffic light at Scripps Ranch Blvd, turn RIGHT. At the second light,, turn LEFT onto Scripps Lake Rd. The entrance to the Reservoir is just ahead on your LEFT. Drive into the parking lot to the right as far as you can go to find a spot.
